Presenting 2010 Health Care Heroes

Sybil Rosen   Dr. Jeffrey L. Kupperman

Sybil Rosen

Dr. Jeffrey L. Kupperman

Sybil has been a community volunteer since her high school days. She worked with the Foundation for the Junior Blind for three years and discovered the rewards of giving to others. In Los Angeles Sybil managed a dental office for over two decades, as well as the dentist who was her dear husband for 25 years. After her husband’s death she was drawn to the beauty and serenity of Santa Barbara and moved here in 1989.

She was overwhelmed by the opportunities for helping others and soon discovered that this was the secret to making kind and caring friends.

Sybil has volunteered in the Central Library Adult Literacy Program, but it was her time volunteering for the Family Service Agency that brought her to the true meaning of volunteering and philanthropy. She was on the FSA Board for seven years in various leadership capacities as well as chairing the amazing Children’s Festival for each of those years.

She served on the Steering Committee of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Collectors Council for 15 years serving as Chair for several years. Her husband, Robert, opened up the world of art to her and she enjoyed sharing that with others.

She has served on Casa Serena’s Women Recovery Homes Board for the past 4 years and is Co-President with Bruce Read at this time. Her other commitments are to the Fund Development committee of Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics and the Capital Campaign Committee of Habitat for Humanity.

“I have created a circle of caring that feeds my soul. I have seen what a difference I can make by giving my time, energy and dollars to women ready to change their lives, free of alcohol and drugs, to parents trying to do the best for their children in medical and dental care, counseling and education and an important part of this is having a home to call their own. I was fortunate to have all of these things and I am thrilled to be able to have the time and resources to help others achieve this.”

Dr. Jeffrey L. Kupperman has practiced Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care Medicine, and Internal Medicine in Santa Barbara, California, since 1981, as a Diplomate of the American Boards of Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, and Critical Care Medicine and a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians.

He is a native of New Orleans, and received education and medical training at Trinity College, Tulane University School of Medicine, and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He has been honored as a member of the AOA Honor Medical Society, and awarded the Outstanding Resident and Outstanding Fellow Awards, Outstanding New Faculty Award, and Excellence in Teaching Awards.

In Santa Barbara, Dr. Kupperman first joined the Santa Barbara Medical Foundation Clinic, now the Sansum Medical Clinic, and later opened his current private practice of Pulmonary Medicine. He has enjoyed his practice at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for close to 30 years, and has served as Chief of the Medical Staff, Chairman of the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Medical Director of the Respiratory Care Department, Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit, and Medical Director of Informatics. He currently serves as the Secretary of the Cottage Health System Board of Directors. He is also active in the Cottage House Staff Training Program, and holds an appointment as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

Dr. Kupperman has been active in the Santa Barbara community with the Santa Barbara Foundation and the American Heart Association, and as a Past-President of the American Lung Association of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. He is, in addition, a Past-President of the California Thoracic Society, and an active member of the American Lung Association, the American Thoracic Society, the California Medical Association, and the Santa Barbara County Medical Society.

Dr. Kupperman enjoys jogging, skiing, and traveling. He and his wife Nancy, a pediatrician, now at the Santa Barbara County Clinics, are extremely proud of their children, Shira and her husband Adam, Asher, and Eli.
