Health Promotion Programs

Smoking Cessation Program: These classes encourage and support people in becoming comfortable, long-term non-smokers. Nicotine replacement products and other stop-smoking aids are available at no charge to those who qualify. A $20 donation is requested for the class materials. A weekly Tobacco Relapse Prevention group is available.

HIV/AIDS & Hepatitis C Testing: Free HIV and Hepatitis C Testing available at 3 clinic locations to anyone over 13 years of age. Free, anonymous HIV testing is done in a private session with a certified HIV test counselor. It includes a risk assessment, education and counseling. The results are available in one week, during which questions are answered and recommendations and referrals are given. A Hepatitis C Support Group is held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 6:30-8:00. Cancer Detection Program (CDP): CDP reduces the incidence of breast and cervical cancer in low-income, uninsured women by providing annual screening, diagnostic services and follow-up. Women age 25 and over are eligible for a pelvic exam and PAP. Women age 40 and over are eligible for a breast exam and mammogram. Contact: Carmen Madrigal, 968-1511 ext. 109

Talking About Health Series: Monthly, bilingual evening programs are offered to the public free of charge on a variety of timely topics. Free snacks are provided. Some popular topics include "Understanding Asthma", "Diabetes 101", and "Dental Health". Check the Program Calendar for current class topics and dates. Diabetes Prevention and Management Program: Offers classes and workshops to encourage patients and community members to develop lifelong fitness and healthy nutrition skills. An on-going eight-week nutrition and diabetes management program is offered to all referred patients. Individual nutrition therapy by registered dieticians is available at all three sites. Health Program Center Outreach: Our Outreach Coordinators work with various community organizations and individuals, such as local churches, schools and businesses to assist community members to access all the programs and services SBNC has to offer. With Our Person-to-Person "Promotores" Program, the HPC Outreach Coordinator invites small groups of primarily Hispanic women (10-12 persons) to attend evening talks on SBNC's low-cost health services. Presentations focus on breast health, well-child exams, children's health insurance, smoking cessation, women's health, HIV/AIDS, diabetes management and nutrition education.
